This May, we’re gearing up for one of our favourite times of the year: our annual cycling competition. It’s more than just a race; it’s a celebration of sports tourism, community, nature, and wellness.
And it’s happening in a few weeks. For those of you looking to step away from the daily grind, this event offers a fantastic reason to visit our beautiful region. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist ready to conquer our challenging routes or simply someone who loves to cheer on determined athletes amidst breathtaking backdrops, there’s a place for you. It's a chance to witness incredible athleticism, soak in the positive vibes, and feel that rush of being part of something bigger, all while surrounded by the tranquility of Mathioya Village.
We believe in strengthening our community, in celebrating wellness, and in embracing the power of sports to bring people together. That’s why our support for Sports Tourism isn't just a buzzword; it's part of our DNA, a core part of our CSR commitment.
Since 2015, except during the COVID-19 lockdown, we’ve hosted an annual road cycling competition that has grown into a community tradition. It’s called the Aberdare C70 Madaraka Road Biking Challenge, and it takes place every June on Madaraka Day. Riders from all walks of life gather to cycle across scenic terrain, climb through cool, misty highlands, and celebrate freedom in motion.
It’s more than a race. It’s a reminder that our bodies were made for more than traffic jams and office chairs; and that our land is not just something to look at, but something to ride, run, and be part of.
Why We Care About Sports Tourism
To us, wellness isn’t just about massages and healthy food (although we do love those things).
It’s also about movement. About the joy of using your body in nature. About reconnecting to yourself through the trail under your feet — or in this case, the road under your wheels.
Sports tourism allows people to travel with intention. Whether you're a casual cyclist, a spectator, or someone who’s always wanted to explore a new part of Kenya while getting your heart rate up — this is for you.
We’ve seen it again and again: city folks arrive worn out, and by the time they leave, they’re laughing louder, sleeping deeper, and seeing life with a little more light.
Our Annual Cycling Competition – What to Expect
Every year, cyclists from different parts of Kenya (and even beyond) join us in Mathioya for this scenic cycling experience. It’s not just about who wins — it’s about the journey.
Picture this:
-
Winding roads that snake through tea farms and villages.
-
Misty mountain air that feels like a hug to your lungs.
-
Locals cheering you on from the roadside, kids waving, goats minding their own business.
-
That rush of joy as you descend into valleys and rise again with grit and grace.
The route itself runs through the heart of the Aberdare Ranges region on winding roads in places that still feel untouched. It’s tough, yes. But it’s also breathtaking. And you’ll carry those views with you long after you’ve left.
Why It Matters to Us – A CSR Effort Rooted in Community
This cycling event isn’t just about sport. It’s a chance to give back.
Through our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, we support local youth, promote eco-tourism, and encourage the growth of homegrown sports talent. Some of the proceeds and efforts go toward:
-
Supporting local cycling clubs and sports education
-
Encouraging outdoor fitness among the youth
-
Boosting the local economy through guest visits and hospitality
-
Preserving the region's beauty through eco-friendly travel awareness
It’s our small way of saying: this land matters. These people matter. Movement matters.
Need a Break? Come Ride or Cheer Along
If life has felt a little too much lately — if you’re tired of your daily grind, your loud neighborhood, the endless weight of the headlines — maybe this is the escape you didn’t know you needed.
Come for the ride. Or just come to watch. Bring your camera. Or bring a good book and sit under a tree near the finish line. Cheer for strangers. Feel alive again.
